Million-dollar support provides new momentum for our energy project

Apr 28, 2025

We at West Maritime AS are proud to have received up to 7.4 million NOK in support from the Research Council. The funds will be allocated to our development project, Smart Pump Energy Reduction System (SPERS), which aims to reduce energy consumption across various onboard systems. This can result in both lower fuel costs and more efficient utilization of battery capacity.

The idea behind the project has been in development for several years, but the pandemic provided us with the time and space to work more purposefully on preliminary studies and application processes. Our focus is on developing a solution that is easy to install, reliable, and efficient—for both new builds and existing vessels.

To ensure the best possible outcome, we have partnered with Remøy Shipping, which contributes operational knowledge and testing, as well as SINTEF Ocean in Trondheim, which will be our research and development partner. Together, we will test, simulate, and validate the solution both theoretically and practically.

The project has a timeframe of approximately 2.5 years, and we see great potential if we succeed. We believe this will help reduce operating and maintenance costs while decreasing the environmental footprint of shipping. Additionally, the project could lead to new jobs in the region.

This year marks our company's 25th anniversary. Since our founding in 1996, we have provided engineering services to local and regional maritime industries, and in 2018 we expanded our operations through the acquisition of MetalCad in Croatia.
